This is an original, unused ballot for the Proposed Constitutional Amendments for the Town of Bremen, Main for the election of September, 10 1917. Proposed Amendment No. 1 is for Woman's Suffrage and reads in part, "The right to vote or to hold office shall not be denied or abridged on account of sex." This referendum was overwhelmingly defeated with 36,713 no votes to 9,428 affirming. Main wouldn't receive woman's suffrage until November of 1919 when the state legislature voted 72-68 to ratify the 19th Amendment, making it the 19th state to do so.
