Endicott Peabody (1920-1997) served as the 62nd Governor of Massachusetts from 1963 to 1965.
During college, he played football for Harvard. He was
an All-American defensive lineman who was eventually inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame
. After earning his Bachelor's Degree in 1942, Peabody
served in the United States Navy during World War II
. He then went on to attend Harvard Law School.
In 1948, he earned his J.D. and joined the Massachusetts bar.
Peabody was elected Governor in 1962, and served only one two-year term.
While he was in office, Peabody successfully extended the terms of office in Massachusetts from two years to four years
, a statute that went into effect with the 1966 election. Peabody was staunchly opposed to the death penalty and refused to sign death warrants.
He recommended the commutation of every death sentence that came before him during his tenure as governor.
In addition, Peabody
worked to prevent housing discrimination
by way of tighter legislation and
helped establish drug addiction treatment programs.
Leverett Saltonstall (1892-1979)
served as
Governor of Massachusetts (1939-1945) and U.S. Senator
from 1945-1967.
As part of the Saltonstall Family that came over on the Mayflower to settle in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, he was also the
tenth direct descendent to graduate from Harvard and the great-grandson of Leverette Saltonstall (1783-1845), a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts (1817-1819, 1831-1832).
