Bricker was first elected governor of Ohio in 1938, having been attorney general earlier in the decade. He was reelected twice, in 1940 and 1942. In 1944, he accepted the Republican nomination for vice-president, sharing a losing ticket with Gov. Thomas Dewey of New York. He would later represent Ohio in the United States Senate.
