Hang Gliding manufacturers have brought some really great hardware to the hang gliding market over the years, and the current airfoil carbon-fiber speedbars on the ATOS, and the Wills Wing Talon T2C, Sport 2 and the U2, and on the Moyes Lightspeed and Litesport, are something that we would have only dreamed about a decade ago. Who would have thought that a carbon-fiber basetube would trickle down to the recreational glider market so quickly?
Just one problem, that I see: There has been no
good
way to mount wheels directly on the carbon-fiber airfoil basetube until now. We've designed something really great to solve that problem.
Members of Team Raven collaborated on the WHOOSH TM * Airfoil Speedbar Wheel Hubs (Patent Pending) that you see here. The design criteria was simple, but the engineering was challenging: To fabricate a machined plastic hub that would be flexible enough to wrap around and close on the carbon-fiber basetube like a clam shell, that wouldn't easily slide sideways, and that would accommodate wheels that can bolt together with no tools. Oh, yeah, and it has to allow for the normal use of the VG line.
These hubs are more complex than the hubs for other carbon bars (such as our hubs for the Wills Wing or Moyes carbon basetubes).
What makes the ATOS hubs more complex?
They are designed to go on/off the basetube while the glider is fully assembled, with no tools. The hubs open like a clamshell and close around the basetube. The wheel halves complete the assembly. No parts need remain on the basetube (except for a few rubberbands or wraps of tape).
They are designed to sit on the basetube itself, just outboard from the skid humps. They are not intended to fit on top of the skids.
The skid humps will limit any travel of the wheel inboard on the bar. Wide rubberbands and/or tie wraps and/or tape will be used to limit any travel in the outboard direction.
The basetube angles up at 10º just outboard of the skid hump. For this reason, the airfoil-shaped center bore of the hub must also be angled at 10º to keep the wheels vertical.
The basetube has two distinctly different curves in cross-section. The top-surface curve is different from the bottom surface curve.
Between the asymmetry of the cross section and the 10º angle, the hubs have to be made as dedicated right and left side pieces (part # HLAL and HLAR). We can’t simply flip the hub and use it on the other side.
The HLAL and HLAR hubs are made to fit our W6LN, W6LD, and W8L Whoosh!Wheels. You will be able to use these same wheels with interchangeable hubs to fit the Moyes or Wills carbon bar (or similar), sold separately. If you already have a set of our W6LN/W6LD/W8L wheels, we can sell you a set of hubs to fit the ATOS bar. As always, individual components are available as needed.
NOTE: The hubs for the ATOS bar will
not
fit our popular W6S or W8S wheels, which have a smaller center bore and are intended to be used on aluminum basetubes. Our products for carbon bars are not interchangeable with our products for aluminum bars.
Our
Carbon Whoosh!Wheels
are available with interchangeable hubs for three different carbon control bar models. You can choose these 8" wheels, or our smaller 6.25" wheels to fit the same hubs (see our other offerings in our online store).
The 3.50” black nylon hubs are sturdy and much larger than our 2.375” hubs for aluminum bars. The PVC plastic wheels for these 3.50” hubs have a much wider bore when compared to our wheels for aluminum control bars. For this reason,
the components of our Carbon Whoosh!Wheels are interchangeable with each other, but they are not interchangeable with Whoosh!Wheels for aluminum bars.
In developing
Carbon Whoosh!Wheels
, we researched every wheel product and skid available for carbon bars on the world market. Our goal was to produce the absolutely best-fitting, easiest to use, sturdiest, and safest wheel product possible for this application. We also gave serious consideration to the fragility of carbon control bars; we wanted to produce a product that would not only work well in an easy landing, but would also likely ‘do no harm’ in a harder landing. We found wheels made by other manufacturers that look nice and roll well, but which have hubs so narrow that they present a clear risk to the carbon basetube in a hard landing (think: blunt hatchet). We designed Carbon Whoosh!Wheels with a generous 1.125” stance on the control bar to spread the load of a hard drop landing. We can’t guarantee that you’ll get away undamaged every time you land hard…but we’re confident that your carbon basetube will survive, without damage, some impacts that would surely result in damage if the hub were narrower.
Since this part isn't injection-molded, each hub is machined out of a solid block of black nylon, and each wheel is machined out of a solid block of deep gray PVC plastic. We did everything that we could to simplify the machining of this part, so as to keep the production costs down. Still, like everything else in hang gliding that is built in batches of a few dozen at a time, and made in
America
, this wheel adapter will be fairly pricey. But, hey, this is hang gliding, need I say more?

Installation tips:
Day-to-day installation is easy, and requires no tools. It takes only seconds to install each wheel. You can put the wheels on after the glider has been completely assembled. Just unbolt the two halves of each wheel, open up the hub, wrap the hub around the basetube, and re-bolt the wheel halves back together! The Whoosh!Wheel clamps in position and is not affixed to the basetube with any bolts or screws. We recommend using electrical tape, tie wraps (‘zip ties’) or fat rubberbands (not included) on the basetube to limit side-to-side travel of the Whoosh!Wheels.
These wheels will not interfere with the VG cleat/line on the right side of your ATOS basetube.
Please note that Whoosh!Wheels are not designed to withstand hard vertical landings or hard landings with sideways motion. If you land going sideways, the entire Whoosh!Wheel assembly can and may slide on the basetube. In the event of a hard drop, you may damage your carbon basetube when the ground impacts the wheel from below. Try not to do that.
In the unlikely event that you should damage your Whoosh!Wheels, we'll be happy to provide pro-rated individual replacement parts to our customers. In other words, you don't have to buy a complete replacement set if you've only damaged a portion of your Whoosh!Wheel set.
