65 MURRAY ASTROFLITE BOYS MIDDLEWEIGHT SCHRECKENGOST DESIGN SPACELINER COMPLETE

$ 263.47

Availability: 100 in stock
  • Year: 1965
  • Condition: The best thing about this bike is that all the breakable plastic parts are there and in decent condition. The dual headlight with switches, the rear warning light on the rack, the rocket jewels on the rack, and the sprocket jewel are all there. Original paint with some rust spots under the paint. Not bad it gives it appropriate patina. Fair pinstripes & graphics. The screening from the chainguard is gone. It would have said Astro Flite. The chrome is not perfect but it is nice. Good wheels with clean rims and spokes. The hub works well. Old Allstate tires hold air. Bike can be ridden. The pedals are not original. The saddle looks appropriate and of the period but it may not be original. The springs and pan are repainted. A few minor dings in the fenders. The glass in the mirror is cloudy. Overall I think the bike looks great. It is not overly cleaned. It is not restored. It has a nice original patina which is popular these days.

    Description

    This is a 1965 Murray Astroflite bicycle.
    Murray of Ohio made bicycles with the Murray name as well as bicycles for other Companies like Sears.
    This  bicycle is Murray's own version of the Sears Spaceliner, which is very popular among collectors.
    Viktor Schreckengost designed these bicycles. He was one of America's foremost industrial designers. He designed the 1939 Murray Mercury Pacemaker World's Fair bicycle, the cab over engine truck, many of the pedal toys Murray manufactured, the pressed metal porch chairs, beautiful pottery, glass items, and countless other items.
    Schreckengost lived in Cleveland. He taught at the Cleveland Institute of Art. He was Murray's chief designer. He was friends with Elliot Ness who came to Cleveland as Public Safety Director after his stint with The Untouchables, where he nailed AL Capone.
    Schreckengost died in 2008 at the age of 101. After his death the bicycles he designed became more desirable and went up in value.
    It is a boys middleweight with 26" x 1.75" old Allstate tires.
    Komet Super coaster brake hub.
    Those yellow spots, near the front of the tank, on both sides are decals not scrapes.
    Horn tank, dual headlights, dashboard with both original switches, rear carrier with red warning light, truss rods on the front, rocket jewels on the back of the rack, and plastic jewel on the chain ring.
    It is unusual to find all of the plastic parts in decent condition on one of these bicycles.
    I have shipped a number of Spaceliners and other similar bicycles without damage. I will be able to ship this safely. I will have to remove the headlights and some other fragile parts and pack them in foam or bubble wrap.
