Another notable representative of Soviet automobile manufacturing is Moskvitch 408 - Export Variant of a very popular, reliable, and durable 408 model, which was produced at the AZLK Factory in Moscow from 1964 to 1975. This Export Variant, in addition to the safety features, had various quality improvements.

In 1969 a new automobile body appeared. It had square headlights produced in Eastern Germany and triangle turn signals in the back. This body was initially intended for Moskvitch 412, however, both Moskvitch 412 and Moskvitch 408 were produced in this body until 1975. Back in the day, those were modern cars that were successfully exported to Europe. At least half of the cars produced have been exported.
The letter E in the name of this 1974 Moskvitch 408E stands for Export. It complied with European safety requirements and did not require additional modernizations. Moskvitch 408 was also assembled in Belgium at Scaldia-Volga S.A. facility and in Bulgaria. Interestingly, the Moskvitch 408 was the first Soviet passenger vehicle that was crash-tested.
Moskvitch 408 was engineered for tough USSR conditions. It can consume low-grade fuel, being at the same time a fuel-efficient vehicle capable of going 26 MPG. Its suspension is stronger than most passenger vehicles', its interior is made of hard-to-wear materials and always looks at its best. This 1974 Moskvitch 408 is among the strongest oldtimer vehicles that are capable of being driven a lot more often compared to its age-mates.
