Description
I have for sale a very nice 1968 Schwinn 5-speed Apple Krate Stingray Bicycle. The frame is coded FDXXXXXX, which makes this a June 1968 frame. The flamboyant red powder coating, with thousands and thousands of tiny metal flake sparkles added to it, is out of this world. It is unique to this bicycle just as the Mona Lisa painting is unique to Da Vince. You will not find this on any other schwinn Krate bicycle unless I am the one that had it done to it.The 5-speed Shifter is the original 1968 shifter and is in good shape. It has very little surface rust on it and it is one of the better ones out there for its age. The decals on it look great.
The overload tube next to the shifter is in very good condition. I do not see any corrosion on this little component at all. It has weathered the storm for all these years and it still looks good.
The fork assembly on this frame is the original 1968 Fork Assembly. It is in great condition considering it is 53 years old. It does not have very much rust on it at all.
The rear 5-speed wheel is an original 1970 Schwinn wheel. It is in great condition. It does not have very much rust on it at all. That means the chrome on it shines up just fine and dandy. It spins straight and true and you will have many years of use with this five-speed wheel.
The rear Schwinn Stingray tire is the original 1968 dated knobby tire. It is in very good condition considering it is 53 years old. There is little cracking on it, but it has been ridden around the block a few dozen times throughout its life. However, there does appear a linear cracking that goes along the the tread cap and the rest of the tire. This is a common phenomenon that happens to over 95% of vintage bicycle tires that are over 50 years old. This phenomenon even happens to vintage car tires, too. There is still plenty of knobby tread left on this tire.
.
The front 16 inch Atom wheel, with its drum brake and braking lever, is the original wheel that came with this bicycle. It, too, is in good condition. There is very little rust on this wheel. The drum brake can stop this bike on a dime like it did when it was brand new. It spins straight and turns true like it should.
The front tire is the original 1968 dated Schwinn superior tire. It is in great shape considering it’s age. There’s not very much cracking on it at all. I feel this tire is good enough to be ridden on the street even at its current age
The handlebars are the original 1969 handlebars that came with this bicycle. It does have the 69 date stamped on it. It is in good condition considering it is now 52 years old now. The chrome shines on it just fine and dandy. There are some scrape marks in the obvious places where the original boy owner laid the bike down on the road or sidewalk so he could go play with his friends.
The two brake cables and the shifter cable are new and fully functional. They are Grey just like the original 1968 cables. They will give you many years of use and they look fantastic on this bike.
The black and white checkered flag mirror is new. It looks nice and it is very similar to the original stingray checkered flag mirror you would find on the popular Stingray and Krate bicycles back in the late 60s and early 70s.
The Schwinn Approved Apple Krate handlebar grips are the original grips that came with this bicycle. They are in good condition. They still hold the sparkly luster in their plastic casing.
The gooseneck stem is the original stem that came with this bicycle. It, too, is dated 68. The chrome on it is in nice condition considering it, too, is now 53 years old.
The chain guard is an original chain guard of the late 60s. It is in good condition. The painted chrome edging on it is very nice. The powder coated flamboyant red color with sparkles looks impressive just like the frame if I do say so myself.
The sprocket and crank are original. The crank is date stamped 68. Both are in great shape. The chrome on them gleams nicely in the sunlight. They are not perfect, but what do you expect for something that is now 53 years old?
The Schwinn Bow pedals are the original 1968 pedals. The right side pedal looks good, but the left pedal has rust issues. They were, of course, made by the talented craftsmen of Germany.
Next is the chrome chain that is on this bicycle. It is new and it looks fantastic. It will give you many years of use.
The 5-speed derailleur is the original derailleur that came with this bicycle. It is in good condition for being over 50 years old. The chrome on it shines up just fine and dandy in the sunlight.
The rear fender is the original 1968 fender with its razor edge. It is in decent shape considering it being over 50 years old. The chrome still looks inice on it.
The kickstand is original. There is not very much rust on it at all. It is in great condition and it looks great with the rest of the bicycle.
The sissy bar is an original late 90s sissy bar. Is in good condition for its age.
I believe the center seat post is an original 1968 seat post and it is in good condition. The chrome on it shines just fine and dandy in the sunlight.
The seat post clamp is original and is still in good condition. It is the little things like this that completes a Schwinn Krate bicycle.
We now come to the banana seat. It is a repop of the original 1968 Schwinn Apple Krate Stingray banana seat and it is in tip top condition. I do not know if you have noticed this but lately these types of Schwinn banana seats are going up in value at an astronomical rate. A used and abused schwinn banana seat are listed as high as 5 and a very nice schwinn banana seat are listed as high as 00.
The 4 1/4 inch rear reflector is in good condition. These reflectors are normally 3 1/4 inches in diameter, but not this one. This one is 4 1/4 in diameter. Wow! It looks very nice and it illuminates brilliantly when light is cast on it at night time.
The next thing on the list here is the smoke tinted windshield. It looks absolutely fantastic with this bicycle. How many of these Schwinn Krate bicycles do you find windshield on them? I’ll tell you how many…. zero. There are none that have them except the ones I have on here. It is new and it looks fantastic.
These original restored Schwinn Apple Krate 5-speed bicycles are hot commodities to have. They will always hold their value for being classic Schwinn bicycles. They are like restored antique cars which are worth thousands of dollars. They will always hold their value if they are taken good care of.
