Vintage 1968 election campaign tab for Democratic Illinois Gov. Samuel H. Shapiro, who had just ascended to the office in May of that year from his post as lieutenant governor after Gov. Otto Kerner resigned to take a seat on the federal appellate court.
Marquee portion of tab measures 3/8" x 1 3/8". Top of tab to bottom of marquee is 1 7/8".
No manufacturer listed. Union bug on round portion of tab
Shapiro (1907-1987) had served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1947 to 1961, where he took a special interest in mental health issues (Shapiro Developmental Center in his hometown of Kankakee is named for him). He joined Kerner's ticket and won election as lieutenant governor in 1960 and 1964.
But despite his hip campaign logo, Shapiro was defeated in November by Republican Richard B. Ogilvie. Shapiro remained active in state government work and returned to his law practice in Kankakee.
Shapiro was Illinois' second Jewish governor after Henry Horner (1933-1940), thus making Illinois the first state in the nation to have had two Jewish governors (the state's current governor, Democrat J.B. Pritzker, is also Jewish).
