When Carroll Shelby got his hands on the stylish but woefully underpowered AC Ace, the sports car market was changed forever. A lightweight aluminum body, short wheelbase, and a small block V8 was a potent combination. After experimentation was completed on the early 260 V8 Shelby Cobra's, Shelby decided that the more powerful Ford 289 V8's would be better suited for the Cobra. From its debut in 1962 through the end of 1963, Cobra's were an absolute force on racetracks all over the US and Europe. Even though they were quite dominant, the Cobra's didn't have an advantage on any of the high-speed straight-aways that were present at tracks like Daytona, LeMans, and Spa. Needing help aerodynamically, Carroll appointed his ace designer to give the Cobra an edge against the Ferrari's.
Enter Peter Brock. As a 19 year old, Brock became the youngest employee ever hired by GM's design department. Through this, he made his fame by creating the sketch for the "next Corvette" and designed the 1959 Corvette Stingray Racer Prototype. Two years later, Carroll Shelby made Brock the first employee of Shelby American with the main focus of running his High Performance Driving School, designing paint schemes, and creating logo's. This remained Pete's focus until Shelby needed the Cobra to properly dethrone Ferrari and their GT cars. Other than the overall chassis and engine block, Pete completely redesigned the Cobra into a streamlined GT killer called the Daytona Coupe.
Using the innovative Kammback design developed by the Germans, the Daytona had an extremely low drag coefficient helped by the cut-off tail with an inverted angle. When testing the Daytona at Riverside, Ken miles was 30 mph faster than a standard Cobra, perfect for conquering the Mulsane straight. On its competition debut at the 1964 Daytona 2000km, the sole Daytona sat on the pole for the race. Even though it didn't finish the race, the Daytona had left its mark. In 1964, the Daytona's won the GT class in the 12 Hours of Sebring and 24 Hours of Daytona but came up just short to Ferrari in the World Championship. In 1965, that all changed as the squad of Daytona's absolutely dominated the Ferrari's by winning the GT class in 6 major events and clinching the GT World Championship, the first time ever for an American Manufacture.
Between 1964 and 1965, only 6 cars were produced as they all carry their own rich legacy. Fastforward to the mid 2000's, and Superformace begins recreating the Daytona Coupe with help from Pete Brock himself. As a continuation officially licensed by Shelby and designed by the man who created the original car, the Superformance Daytona Coupe is as close as you can get to the real deal. In the mid 2000's, Superformance only produced 150 cars during their original run of cars, with this chassis being #146. Under the hood is a 351 Dart Ford Performance V8 that has been built to 444 C.I. and is backed with a 6-speed manual transmission. Painted in Ford Indigo Blue with Titanium stripes, this Superformance is a fitting modern tribute to the original Ferrari slayer.
