Offered for sale, and on display, at the St. Louis Car Museum is a custom built 1965 Colcock 17-foot Hydroplane named "True North" that is stunning in every detail! Originally designed by nationally recognized Jack Colcock of Seattle,WA, This beautiful wooden race boat was built by Harold Mansfield of Tacoma, WA, and later raced by Richard Rupe. A beautiful restoration was carried out by Allen Bide of Mooresville, NC with outstanding, show-worthy results! This particular custom-built boat would go on to be cared for in the renowned Michael Taggart Vintage Race Boat Collection located in Higgins Lake, MI along with curator Eb Wickes.
We are excited to represent this lightweight wooden hydroplane featuring a classic shovel nose design powered by an early 1963 Ford 221ci OHV V8 with several performance enhancements. This includes Roush Dart Pro1 aluminum heads, aluminum intake with Holley 4150 750cfm carburetor, Clay Smith flat tappet camshaft, custom stainless headers, Holley electric fuel pump, MSD Pro-Billet distributor, Blaster coil, 6M-2 controller and rev-limiter, 8.5mm plug wires; finned aluminum valve covers, Moon Eyes 5-gallon fuel cell & breather caps, and so much more!
Other accessories include Stewart Warner instrumentation with Jones Motrola 10k rpm mechanical tachometer; solid billet aluminum rudder, bracket, & hydrofoil; Cary racing propeller, Allen Blide foot pedals, stainless steel fuel lines, as well custom header covers, form-fitted cloth storage cover, and travel trailer. The trailer features a forward storage box, spare tire, tool bins, and classic steel wheels with chrome hubcaps and trim rings!
It is a gorgeous showpiece and one that has been kept in running operation while in the Taggart collection through January 2018. This example has not been exercised under current ownership while on display in another wood boat collection located in Poplar Bluff, MO. We are confident it can be ready for water use again with minimal effort and preparation. A very special opportunity to own a 100+ mph hydroplane with all the hard work already completed! A showstopper even on dry ground, and one you should really see in person to enjoy the splendid craftsmanship this boat exhibits! Sold on Bill of Sale. Please contact Jon Faust for more information on this wonderfully kept piece of racing history by calling 855-586-3413 or by emailing . Schedule an opportunity to review at our St. Louis showroom. Thanks for looking!
