This example was an open-cab model used in southern California until 1965. It’s dressed in Mint Green with Silver trim. The paint and trim are in excellent condition as expected since the restoration is less than a year old. The bodywork is straight and solid with a curved windscreen. Silver bumpers look great.
This Taylor-Dunn has a one-cylinder electric engine with a two-speed transmission - forward and reverse. It has seven, new heavy-duty batteries that have a 50-mile range on a full charge. Top speed ranges from 19 to 26 mph, depending on terrain, driving style and the driver’s weight. Accessories include turn signals, lights, horn and flashers.
This Trident is a three-wheeler that rolls on tires, size 4.80-8 with chrome disc wheels.
The all-new single bench seat is finished in blue-green with a waffle pattern. Instead of carpeting, there are floor mats. In place of steering wheel is a tiller. The ignition switch and shift lever are located at the base of the seat. The only gauges are an hour counter, an ammeter and secondary ammeter to tell the driver how long before he needs to plug in for the next charge.
In the late 1940s, a chicken farmer in California named R.D. Taylor Sr. needed a way to haul his chicken feed around. He came up with carts to haul the feed. Next, he started selling carts to neighboring farmers and he was asked to create a motorized cart. He developed the predecessor to this little buggy.
In 1951, a gentleman named Fred Dunn threw his hat into the ring and the two of them were a success. By 1955, the name was changed to Taylor-Dunn Manufacturing Company and in 1959, they came out with the model you see here: the Taylor-Dunn Model R Trident, a battery-powered “shopping car” which was fully street legal. They’re known as NEVs today, Neighborhood Electric Vehicles.
If you need something to get around your land without burning gasoline, and you live somewhere with a mostly dry climate, consider this Taylor-Green Trident. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to inspect this electric three-wheeler.
