This beautiful 1954 Sunbeam-Talbot Alpine Mark I Roadster here at Sports Car Company is an ultra-rare find with a superb frame-off restoration completed by the previous owner and was part of a private collection owned for over 35 years.
This gorgeous Alpine Mark I is one of the few remaining models of these hard-to-find cars. Originally there were only 1,582 models made! It is said that 961 were exported to the US and Canada, 445 stayed in the UK, and 175 went to other world markets. It is also noted that only 200 of these beautiful cars remain.
The Alpine Mark I was a beautifully hand-built car derived from the Sunbeam-Talbot 90 Saloon, like the one we currently have here at Sports Car Company. It has a four-cylinder 2,267 cc (138.3 cu in) engine from the saloon but with a raised compression ratio. In 1954 it was given an overdrive unit allowing the vehicle to achieve better fuel efficiency.
This car just received a full major service, including replacing all fluids, servicing the brakes, cleaning the fuel lines, and replacing any belts and hoses, and it drives great!
The Sunbeam-Talbot Alpine Mark I comes with an exciting history. As stated above, the Alpine was derived from the Sunbeam-Talbot 90 Saloon and has become colloquially known as the "Talbot" Alpine. A two-seater sports roadster was initially developed for a one-off rally car by Bournemouth Sunbeam-Talbot dealer George Hartnell.
It had its beginnings as a 1952 Sunbeam-Talbot drophead coupe. Announced in March 1953/1954, it received its name following Sunbeam-Talbot saloon's successes in the Alpine Rally during the early 1950s. On its first competitive outing, the July 1953 Coupe des Alpes, the new car won the Coupe des Dames (Sheila van Damm) and, without loss of any marks, four Coupes des Alpes driven by Stirling Moss, John Fitch, G Murray-Frame, and Sheila van Damm.
An Alpine Mark I was also the true star of the 1957 British horror film "Night Of The Demon" and Alfred Hitchcock's "To Catch a Thief,"  starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. The rumor is that the Alpine Grace Kelly drove in this movie may still be out there today.
The five-digit odometer shows approximately 66k miles; only a handful have been driven in while in the private collection.
