Description
According to Ettinger's book Compacts and Smoking Accessories, the Houbigant flower basket compact was first sold in U.S. department stores in 1935. In Europe the flower basket was a symbol of a happy marriage (Kanebo Compact Web Museum) and may have contributed to the popularity of this compact. We purchased this rouge and facial powder compact at an estate sale and were surprised to discover that both compartments have their original flower basket puffs that repeat the pattern on the lid of the compact. The compact is in very good vintage condition but does have some rub wear on the bottom. The compact measures 1 3/4 inches from front to back and 2 inches at its widest point. We have uploaded 8 enlargeable photos to enable you to examine the compact and puffs in detail. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
