    HISTORICAL NOTES:
    EARLY LIFE:
    James Robert Hamilton b1860-d1933.
    CAREER:
James Robert Hamilton was District Court judge of Travis and Williamson counties, Tex.; Democratic Party executive committee chair; and congressional candidate in 1926.
The back of this photo reads:
INSTRUCTS GRAND JURY TO DELVE TO BOTTOM OF TEXAS' TROUBLES.
Declaring that men who treated public office  as a private snap were betraying their trust.  Judge James R. Hamilton told the new
    Travis County Grand Jury
at its convening to investigate the actions of
    Governor "Ma" Ferguson
and all other officers of the state government.  The grand jury has taken up an inquiry into the highway scandal and other state affairs, which have rocked the "Lone Star State."  Should any indictments be brought, the cases will be tried before Judge Hamilton who is one of the most famous of criminal judges, and was the first to attack the practices of the
    KU KLUX KLAN
from the bench.  He placed several prominent Austin residents in jail several years ago for contempt of court for refusal to answer questions concerning the activities of the Klan, and was one of the first Texas judges to have a grand jury bare the secret membership lists of the KLAN.   James E. Ferguson, following his impeachment in 1917, faced felony charges in his court.  The charges were quashed by the court.
