This listing is for the c1890 Illustrated with eagle and constitution of the union vignette, political Democratic Ticket for Governor, New Hampshire - Charles Amsden."  Also featured on the Democratic Party Ticket is Luther F. McKinney for Representative in Congress, and Eliphalet S. Nutter for Councillor, and John Whittiker  for Senator.  In addition there were 8 Seats contested for local Officers, such as for Sheriff John C. Webster, Solicitor Daniel B. Donovan, Treasurer Henry A. Amerson, Register of Deeds Gilman H. Dimond, Register of Probate Warren Clark, as well as 3 Country Commissioners seats Jeremiah A. Clough, David D. Taylor, John W. Davis.
Measures approx 4"x7.5".
Note that Charles Amsden was the Democratic candidate for governor 1888 and 1890.  Although this ticket is undated, we know that he did not win the 1888 election, but did so well that he was nominated again for the election in 1890.  That campaign was fought by Mr.  Amsden with such a persistent brilliancy that the result was left so much  in doubt that many people believed him to have been elected.
The days  intervening between the election and the assembling of the legislature  that was to settle the mooted question were trying ones. But they brought  out the true character of Mr. Amsden who comported himself with a  quiet dignity that won for him the hearty esteem of his opponents and  added to the affection of his supporters. The balance dipped against him  and he calmly accepted the result — a result that brought no disrespect to  him, since he left the field without the prize, though supported by a  larger vote than has ever been polled for any other Democratic candidate for governor.  ~from "New Hampshire men. This wonderful and novel "Democratic Party Gubernatorial Campaign Ticket" measures approx. 7-1/4" by 4".  (Although the printers of the political tickets had little concern for cutting straight.)  The Ballot is labeled "Democratic Ticket."  Below that is a lovely lithograph illustration, which is just full of symbolism.   It shows a shield, on which it states "Constitution and Union."  An American Bald Eagle sits atop the shield.   Behind it in the background are a farm on the left (symbolizing agriculture,)  and a train, factory, and church steeple (representing the city, and industry.) . There are 2 American Flags as well.  Plus in the foreground are a scythe and gear.  This illustration is intended to portray "inclusion."
A little History: He was a partner with his father and brother in the furniture manufacturing business. He was instrumental in organizing the NH Manufacturers' Mutual Fire Insurance Co, of which he was president.  He served in the state senate 1883 to 1884.  He represented NH at the centennial celebration of the inauguration of Washington as president in 1889 in NY; he was president of NH Democratic state convention in 1892; he past president NH Board of Commissioners for the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893 in Chicago; he was a Mason; president Boston Mercantile Library Ass'n; he was appointed deputy naval officer of customs at Boston, MA on July 12, 1894, and he continued in custom house service thereafter.
During his political career beginning in 1874, he was an alderman of the city  of Concord, and was reelected by a unanimous vote. In 1883 he was a  member of the state senate, being chosen from among a Republican  constituency by a majority of 376.
