- Born in Billerica, Massachusetts in 1810. Moved to Concord, NH and established himself as a businessman, starting his own construction company and eventually becoming a manager and executive in several different railroads in the area; including the Lowell and Nashua, Northern Railroad of New Hampshire, Vermont Central Railway and the Old Colony Railroad.
Stearns began his career in politics serving in the New Hampshire State Senate from 1862 to 1864. He served as the Senate's President pro tempore in 1863 and was a Delegate to the 1864 Republican National Convention.
In 1869 Stearns ran successfully for Governor of New Hampshire and was reelected in 1870.
The document overall is very good condition; little wear along the edges and corners of the small document. There are a few creases along the center of the document (not very visible), there is a very small tear along the bottom center section of the document. There are a few marks on the back in pencil from the previous owner of the document.
